R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to
  a close when Cora Brown of Lamesa passed away on December 14, 2014,
  at the age of 64; and
         WHEREAS, The former Cora Ivory was born on June 14, 1950, in
  Plainview to Henry and Willie Mae Ivory; the family moved to
  Quitaque, and she graduated from Silverton High School before going
  on to receive a degree in criminal justice from Wayland Baptist
  University; she further pursued her education at Sam Houston State
  University, where she graduated in the inaugural class of the Bill
  Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas; and
         WHEREAS, In October 1974, Ms. Brown became the first woman to
  be sworn in as an officer of the Plainview Police Department; she
  was also the first female officer hired by the Lamesa Police
  Department, and from August 1975 to January 1986, she served as a
  juvenile officer and investigator; she then worked as a criminal
  investigator and victim's witness coordinator for the 106th
  Judicial District Attorney's Office until December 1996; for the
  past 17 years, she had worked as the director of the Dawson County
  Senior Center; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to her outstanding career in law
  enforcement, Ms. Brown dedicated a great deal of time and energy to
  volunteer work; she served for 27 years as a member and a president
  of the Lamesa Independent School District board, and she was active
  with many other groups, including the local Dawson County United
  Way, the Lamesa Boys and Girls Club, and West Texas Opportunities,
  Inc.; for the past 15 years, she had also served as pastor of Mount
  Olive Baptist Church in Lamesa; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Brown and her husband, Charlie, enjoyed a
  rewarding marriage of nearly four decades, and they became the
  proud parents of four children, Geoffrey, Ebony, Pamela, and Joe;
  and
         WHEREAS, Devoted to her family and community, Cora Brown will
  be deeply missed, and her leadership, strength of character, and
  generosity of spirit will forever inspire all those who had the good
  fortune to know her; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Cora Brown and
  extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her
  husband, Charlie Brown; to her daughters, Ebony Benton and her
  husband, Al, and Pamela McDonald; to her son, Joe Williams; to her
  granddaughter, Elizabeth Newsome; to her six grandchildren and her
  three great-grandchildren; to her sisters, Ella Oliver, Nellie
  Polley and her husband, Oliver Roberts, Kathryn Davis and her
  husband, Charles, Henrietta Scoggins and her husband, Finis, and
  Dixie Carol Clark and her husband, Jerry; to her brothers, Joshua
  Ivory, Billy Ivory and his wife, Linda, Phineas L. Ivory and his
  wife, Marguerite, and Clarence E. Ivory; and to her other relatives
  and many friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Cora Brown.
