R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The city of Emory lost one of its most admired
  residents with the passing of Howard Norman Garrett on August 24,
  2014, at the age of 93; and
         WHEREAS, Born on September 21, 1920, to John and Bedie
  Garrett, Howard Garrett grew up in Rains County, where his family
  settled some 150 years ago; he graduated from Commerce High School
  and attended East Texas State College before earning his master's
  degree from Sam Houston State University; answering his nation's
  call to duty during World War II, he served as a sergeant alongside
  his brother, David, in the U.S. Army in the Philippines; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Garrett enjoyed a career in public education as
  a teacher and administrator in Diboll and Point, and he was employed
  for several years with the Mutual of Wausau Insurance Company in
  Dallas; he later returned to Rains County and found success in the
  cattle business; while living in Dallas, he married Cornelia Lyles,
  and the couple spent more than a half-century together; and
         WHEREAS, Active in his community throughout his life, this
  esteemed Texan was a member of the Rains County Chamber of Commerce
  and Masonic Lodge No. 180 in Cumby; he was also a devoted congregant
  at County Line Baptist Church and a longtime Sunday school teacher
  at First Baptist Church in Dallas; well known for his interest in
  self-sufficient farming, he frequently volunteered his time to the
  Rains County Farmers Market; and
         WHEREAS, Howard Garrett gave freely of his time and expertise
  to better his community, and he will long be remembered with
  admiration and affection by all those who were fortunate enough to
  share in the richness of his life; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Howard Norman
  Garrett and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to
  his wife, Cornelia Garrett; to his nephews, Bill and Dave Garrett;
  to his niece, Lisa Vinson; and to his other relatives and many
  friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Howard
  Garrett.
