H.R. No. 575

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of
cancer death for men and women in the United States, and the efforts
of the Lubbock and South Plains Colon Cancer Prevention Task Force
to bring attention to this serious health issue are truly
  commendable; and
WHEREAS, In 2011, the most recent year for which data is
available, more than 135,000 Americans were diagnosed with
colorectal cancer, and over 51,000 lives were claimed by the
  disease; and
WHEREAS, Proper screening and early detection and treatment
are vitally important in averting illness and death from this type
of cancer; statistics show that patients who receive treatment for
colon cancer in its early stages have a survival rate greater than
  90 percent; and
WHEREAS, Since the vast majority of colorectal cancers are
diagnosed in people over 50 years of age, it is critical to increase
public awareness among older individuals of the lifesaving benefits
  of colon screening; and
WHEREAS, In the past 15 years, the Colorectal Cancer
Prevention and Awareness Campaign sponsored by the Lubbock and
South Plains Colon Cancer Prevention Task Force has made
significant strides in promoting timely screening and treatment for
  this deadly disease; and
WHEREAS, The dedicated work of the task force has played an
essential role in the fight against colorectal cancer, and the
organization is indeed deserving of recognition for the assistance
it has provided to area residents; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
Legislature hereby commend the Lubbock and South Plains Colon
Cancer Prevention Task Force for its Colorectal Cancer Prevention
and Awareness Campaign and encourage all citizens to be mindful of
the steps they can take to protect their health; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the task force as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
