R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Girl Scouts across Texas are celebrating the 103rd |
|
anniversary of the founding of their organization on March 12, |
|
2015; and |
|
WHEREAS, Established by Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low in |
|
Savannah, Georgia, in 1912, Girl Scouts of the USA began forming |
|
troops in Texas just five years later; membership in the Lone Star |
|
State now exceeds 160,000, and more than 55,000 adult volunteers |
|
provide guidance; and |
|
WHEREAS, Girl Scouts today engage in a variety of activities |
|
that help them to articulate and act on their values, develop |
|
skills, and discover the world around them; they connect with |
|
others in a multicultural environment, and they prepare to take on |
|
leadership roles, thereby furthering the organization's tradition |
|
of promoting greater gender balance in society; and |
|
WHEREAS, Financial literacy has long been a high priority, |
|
and the famous cookie program teaches Girl Scouts important aspects |
|
of business, including such modern techniques as e-marketing and |
|
digital money management; encouraging greater involvement by women |
|
in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the |
|
customized Girl Scout STEM program enhances critical thinking, |
|
problem-solving, and collaboration, and participants have competed |
|
in national robotics contests; and |
|
WHEREAS, Always an integral component of the Girl Scout |
|
experience, outdoor activities allow girls to try new things and |
|
test their limits, gaining confidence and acquiring skills in a |
|
safe, supportive, all-female environment; moreover, the Girl Scout |
|
Research Institute is contributing to the well-being of youngsters |
|
by releasing state-by-state assessment data that can enable |
|
communities to better allocate resources to promote the health, |
|
happiness, and educational attainment of girls; and |
|
WHEREAS, Over the course of more than a century, Girl Scouts |
|
of the USA has nurtured generations of strong, independent female |
|
leaders, and Texas Girl Scouts may indeed take pride in the rich |
|
heritage of their organization; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 103rd anniversary of Girl Scouts |
|
of the USA and extend to all Texas Girl Scouts and their leaders |
|
sincere best wishes for the future. |
