R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Friends, family, and the community of Fort Worth are |
|
deeply saddened by the passing of local trailblazer Walter Beatrice |
|
Campbell Barbour on Sunday February 1, 2015, at the age of 93; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Fort Worth, Walter B., as she was |
|
affectionately known, attended the then-segregated I.M. Terrell |
|
High School; After graduating in 1937, she went on to receive her |
|
Bachelor's degree from Prairie View A&M University followed by a |
|
Master's degree from Georgia's Atlanta University; and |
|
WHEREAS, Walter B. returned to her hometown and in 1977 was |
|
the first African American woman to be elected to the Fort Worth |
|
City Council, a position she held until 1979; and |
|
WHEREAS, During her tenure as a city council member, she |
|
advocated for a health care clinic in the Stop Six area, and in |
|
1994, the Stop Six/Walter B. Barbour Health Center was constructed |
|
in honor of her dedication to medical research in the community; She |
|
is also known for bringing $6 million in street improvements to her |
|
district while a council member; Barbour also served as a tireless |
|
advocate for low-income children in Fort Worth, promoting |
|
recreational facilities and summer food programs; She is also known |
|
for bringing the first fire department to the Stop Six community; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Barbour spent the part of her career supporting the |
|
community's youth by working as a guidance counselor at Eastern |
|
Hills High School, and in 1989 she was appointed as justice of the |
|
peace for Precinct 8; and |
|
WHEREAS, she received the 41st annual Brotherhood/Sisterhood |
|
Citation from the National Conference of Christians and Jews as |
|
well as the Newsmaker of the Year award from the Fort Worth Press |
|
Club; Walter B. was an advocate and an inspiration to countless |
|
individuals in the Fort Worth Community and beyond; now, therefore, |
|
be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Walter Beatrice |
|
Campbell Barbour and celebrate her remarkable life and legacy; and, |
|
be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in the memory of Walter |
|
Beatrice Campbell Barbour. |
