R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The passing of former state representative David |
|
William Crews on February 8, 2015, at the age of 81, deeply saddened |
|
the community of Conroe and brought a great loss to his family and |
|
friends; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Karnes City on February 18, 1933, Mr. Crews |
|
graduated from Karnes City High School before earning his |
|
bachelor's degree from Baylor University; he completed his law |
|
degree at Baylor Law School in 1957 and subsequently opened a |
|
private law practice in Conroe, where he ably served his clients for |
|
more than a half century; and |
|
WHEREAS, This esteemed litigator was Texas counsel for |
|
Western Waste Industries for many years, and he was a longtime |
|
attorney for the Montgomery County Housing Finance Corporation; in |
|
addition, he played a key role in the creation of the Montgomery |
|
County Hospital District, serving as the organization's legal |
|
counsel for 17 years; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Crews began his career in public service in |
|
1960, when he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives at |
|
the age of 27; for four terms, he proudly represented his |
|
constituents in Montgomery, Grimes, Liberty, Chambers, and Madison |
|
Counties, serving as a member of numerous committees and chairing |
|
the House Insurance Committee for two sessions; during his time in |
|
office, he introduced a number of important pieces of legislation, |
|
and his dedicated efforts were instrumental in the establishment of |
|
the George J. Beto Criminal Justice Center at Sam Houston State |
|
University and the construction of North Loop 336 in Conroe; and |
|
WHEREAS, An influential figure in the community, Mr. Crews |
|
gave freely of his time and talents as a member of the Conroe |
|
Chamber of Commerce, earning a spot on the organization's |
|
prestigious Wall of Honor; he helped organize the Tri-County MHMR, |
|
and he was a member of the Boy Scouts of America Advisory Board, as |
|
well as the boards of the Conroe YMCA, Allied Conroe Bank, and |
|
Allied Jetero Bank; moreover, he was an ardent supporter of such |
|
groups as the Montgomery County Food Bank, the Conroe Symphony, |
|
Montgomery County Youth Services, and the Conroe Salvation Army, |
|
and he was a congregant of First United Methodist Church in Conroe |
|
for nearly six decades; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Crews was a devoted father to his two children, |
|
Kelly and Matt, and he later knew the joy of welcoming three |
|
grandchildren, Branden, Morgan, and Will, into his family; well |
|
known for his charismatic and engaging personality, he especially |
|
enjoyed sharing stories and good conversation with friends, loved |
|
ones, and strangers alike; and |
|
WHEREAS, Though it is impossible to gauge the full effect of a |
|
man's life, some people leave their unmistakable mark on the world |
|
as they move through it, and the contributions made by David Crews |
|
will long resonate in the lives of all who knew him; now, therefore, |
|
be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of the Honorable David |
|
William Crews and extend sincere condolences to the members of his |
|
family: to his daughter, Kelly Kolodzey, and her husband, J. B.; to |
|
his son, Matt Crews, and his wife, Karen; to his grandchildren, |
|
Branden and Morgan Miars and Will Crews; to his sisters, Nonie |
|
Kendrick and Doris Puryear and her husband, Glynn; to his brother, |
|
Pat Crews; to his former wife and close friend, Becky Chapman; and |
|
to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of David |
|
Crews. |
