R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, John Mares is retiring from his position as head |
|
football coach and athletic director at Goliad High School at the |
|
end of the 2014-2015 school year, drawing to a close an impressive |
|
35-year career in education and athletics; and |
|
WHEREAS, A 1969 graduate of St. Joseph High School in |
|
Victoria, John Mares began his coaching career as an assistant at |
|
Calhoun and Hallettsville Sacred Heart High Schools; he went on to |
|
serve as head baseball coach and defensive coordinator of the |
|
football team at Goliad High School before returning to his alma |
|
mater in 1991; he spent two decades at St. Joseph, becoming the |
|
winningest football coach in school history with an impressive 108 |
|
victories and also holding the posts of athletic director and |
|
basketball coach; and |
|
WHEREAS, This esteemed mentor came back to Goliad High in |
|
2010, taking over the school's baseball program and joining the |
|
football staff as an assistant; he was promoted to athletic |
|
director and head football coach in 2012, and he quickly helped the |
|
Tigers find success on the gridiron; in his final season, the team |
|
claimed the District 15-3A crown and advanced to the area round of |
|
the University Interscholastic League playoffs, and Coach Mares |
|
finished his career with an impressive 131-59 overall record in |
|
football; moreover, a number of the school's other teams have found |
|
success during his tenure as athletic director, capturing several |
|
district championships; and |
|
WHEREAS, During his retirement, Coach Mares plans to spend |
|
more time with his children and grandchildren and to devote himself |
|
to working on his ranch in Goliad County; and |
|
WHEREAS, For three and a half decades, John Mares has helped |
|
teach young Texans important lessons about teamwork and commitment, |
|
and he may indeed reflect with pride on his many accomplishments as |
|
he looks forward to the next exciting chapter of his life; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate John Mares on his retirement as |
|
head football coach and athletic director at Goliad High School and |
|
extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be |
|
it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Coach Mares as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
