R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, John Mares is retiring from his position as head
  football coach and athletic director at Goliad High School at the
  end of the 2014-2015 school year, drawing to a close an impressive
  35-year career in education and athletics; and
         WHEREAS, A 1969 graduate of St. Joseph High School in
  Victoria, John Mares began his coaching career as an assistant at
  Calhoun and Hallettsville Sacred Heart High Schools; he went on to
  serve as head baseball coach and defensive coordinator of the
  football team at Goliad High School before returning to his alma
  mater in 1991; he spent two decades at St. Joseph, becoming the
  winningest football coach in school history with an impressive 108
  victories and also holding the posts of athletic director and
  basketball coach; and
         WHEREAS, This esteemed mentor came back to Goliad High in
  2010, taking over the school's baseball program and joining the
  football staff as an assistant; he was promoted to athletic
  director and head football coach in 2012, and he quickly helped the
  Tigers find success on the gridiron; in his final season, the team
  claimed the District 15-3A crown and advanced to the area round of
  the University Interscholastic League playoffs, and Coach Mares
  finished his career with an impressive 131-59 overall record in
  football; moreover, a number of the school's other teams have found
  success during his tenure as athletic director, capturing several
  district championships; and
         WHEREAS, During his retirement, Coach Mares plans to spend
  more time with his children and grandchildren and to devote himself
  to working on his ranch in Goliad County; and
         WHEREAS, For three and a half decades, John Mares has helped
  teach young Texans important lessons about teamwork and commitment,
  and he may indeed reflect with pride on his many accomplishments as
  he looks forward to the next exciting chapter of his life; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate John Mares on his retirement as
  head football coach and athletic director at Goliad High School and
  extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be
  it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Coach Mares as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
