R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer and |
|
the second leading cause of cancer death among women, affecting |
|
more than 12 percent of females born in this nation; and |
|
WHEREAS, Breast cancer can spread quickly and inexplicably to |
|
vital organs, regardless of treatment or preventative measures; and |
|
WHEREAS, Metastatic breast cancer is the most advanced stage |
|
of breast cancer, in which cancer has spread beyond the breast to |
|
other organs in the body; and |
|
WHEREAS, Thirty percent of women who have had early-stage |
|
breast cancer will eventually receive a diagnosis of metastatic |
|
breast cancer, after which the median survival rate is only about |
|
three years; and |
|
WHEREAS, Although there have been tremendous advancements in |
|
breast cancer treatment, there is a crucial need for continued |
|
research and for the development of more effective treatments for |
|
metastatic breast cancer; and |
|
WHEREAS, Statistics suggest that as many as 250,000 women and |
|
men in the United States are living with metastatic breast cancer, |
|
but many Americans know very little about the disease; and |
|
WHEREAS, Across the Lone Star State and around the country, |
|
the dedicated members of patient care support and treatment and |
|
advocacy groups are working to increase awareness, to provide |
|
patient navigation assistance, and to underscore the importance of |
|
medical research; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby express its support for raising awareness of |
|
metastatic breast cancer and for expanding research into its causes |
|
and the development of more effective treatments. |
