R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Vicar General Daniel E. Garcia was appointed by Pope |
|
|
Francis as auxiliary bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Austin in |
|
|
January 2015, and he will be ordained on March 3, 2015; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Bishop-elect Garcia grew up in Cameron and earned an |
|
|
associate's degree from Tyler Junior College, bachelor's and |
|
|
master's degrees from St. Mary's Seminary at the University of |
|
|
St. Thomas, and a master's degree in liturgical studies from |
|
|
St. John's University in Minnesota; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Ordained as a priest for the Diocese of Austin in |
|
|
1988 by Bishop John E. McCarthy, Bishop-elect Garcia has served as |
|
|
associate pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, Cristo Rey |
|
|
Parish, and St. Louis King of France Parish, all in Austin, as well |
|
|
as St. Mary Magdalene Parish in Humble; in 1995, he was named |
|
|
founding pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Austin, and he |
|
|
remained in that position until his appointment as Vicar General |
|
|
and Moderator of the Curia in 2014; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Over the course of his tenure with the Austin |
|
|
Diocese, Bishop-elect Garcia has served as vocation director and |
|
|
master of ceremonies for the Bishop, as chair of the Presbyteral |
|
|
Council, as dean of the Austin North Deanery, and as a member of the |
|
|
Diocesan Vocation Team, Liturgical Commission, Diaconal Advisory |
|
|
Committee, College of Consultors, and Priests' Personnel Board; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In his new role as auxiliary bishop, he will assist |
|
|
the bishop in carrying out the duties of chief shepherd of the |
|
|
diocese; he is the first person in the 67-year history of the Austin |
|
|
Diocese to be appointed to serve as auxiliary bishop; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, With his impressive array of experience in the |
|
|
church, Bishop-elect Garcia brings to his new post an outstanding |
|
|
record of leadership, and it is a pleasure to join in honoring him |
|
|
for his devotion to his faith; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Vicar General Daniel E. Garcia on |
|
|
his appointment as auxiliary bishop of the Catholic Diocese of |
|
|
Austin and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be |
|
|
it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Bishop-elect Garcia as an expression of high regard by |
|
|
the Texas House of Representatives. |
