R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Jose Benito Canales, a longtime justice of the peace |
|
in Duval County and an engaged citizen, has made meaningful |
|
contributions to his community over the course of many decades; and |
|
WHEREAS, The son of Antonio and Carolina Canales, Jose |
|
Canales was born in Oilton on April 3, 1930; his family moved to |
|
Freer when he was 10, and he graduated from Freer High School in |
|
1950; and |
|
WHEREAS, Immediately after finishing school, Mr. Canales |
|
joined the United States Army; he was stationed in Munich, Germany, |
|
where his duties included handling bookkeeping and requisitions and |
|
helping to guard against attempts to tamper with or dismantle the |
|
Nazi concentration camps; and |
|
WHEREAS, After returning home in 1955, Mr. Canales exchanged |
|
wedding vows with the former Barbara Vera; they became the proud |
|
parents of three children, Ricardo, Carolina, and Corina, and later |
|
welcomed a second generation into their treasured family; the |
|
couple shared a fulfilling relationship of almost 60 years before |
|
Mrs. Canales's passing on March 27, 2014; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Canales worked for a while as a route salesman |
|
and as a bus driver for the Freer Independent School District; in |
|
1984, he was appointed justice of the peace, and he subsequently won |
|
election to the post, which he would hold for 32 years; during that |
|
time he also served in a number of political roles, including that |
|
of precinct chair; in addition, he was a founder of the Jimmy Hicks |
|
VFW Post, and he was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church; |
|
since moving to Corpus Christi, he has continued to be involved in |
|
his community; and |
|
WHEREAS, Through his myriad contributions in the public |
|
realm, Jose B. Canales has earned the respect and admiration of his |
|
fellow citizens, and it is indeed a privilege to recognize him at |
|
this time; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor Jose B. Canales for his outstanding civil |
|
leadership and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Canales as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
