R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Nita Battise of Livingston was sworn in as the new |
|
chair of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribal Council on February 23, 2015; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, The council is the seven-member governing body of |
|
the federally recognized Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas, a Native |
|
American tribe that has lived in Polk County since the 1850s; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Battise is the third woman to be elected as |
|
chair, and the first chair to be elected directly by popular vote of |
|
the tribal membership; since August 2011, she has served the tribe |
|
as vice chair of the council; and |
|
WHEREAS, This respected leader is a member of a venerable |
|
family with a long history in the tribe, including her grandmother, |
|
Dorcas Battise Bullock, who celebrated her 95th birthday three days |
|
before Ms. Battise was sworn in; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Battise may indeed reflect with pride on the |
|
trust and respect she has earned from the members of her tribe, as |
|
she takes on the challenges and opportunities of her new role; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Nita Battise on her election as |
|
chair of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribal Council and extend to her |
|
sincere best wishes for success in her important work; and, be it |
|
further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Ms. Battise as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
