R E S O L U T I O N
|

|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Therese Shelton has received the 2015 Ron Barnes |
|
|
Distinguished Service to Students Award from the Texas Section of |
|
|
the Mathematical Association of America; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Established in 1915, the MAA is the largest |
|
|
professional society dedicated to advancing the mathematical |
|
|
sciences at the undergraduate level; Dr. Shelton has been honored |
|
|
by her peers for her exceptional efforts to prepare students for |
|
|
careers in mathematics; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Shelton began her teaching career as an |
|
|
assistant professor at Southwestern University in 1987, and she was |
|
|
made an associate professor in 1994; during her tenure, she has |
|
|
guided many students as they have prepared their work to present at |
|
|
mathematics conferences, encouraging them to go beyond the usual |
|
|
requirements of undergraduate coursework; additionally, she has |
|
|
served as chair of the mathematics and computer science department |
|
|
and the natural sciences division, and she has made presentations |
|
|
at a number of professional gatherings; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, After developing an interest in mathematics in high |
|
|
school, Dr. Shelton earned a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M |
|
|
University and went on to attain a master's degree and a doctorate |
|
|
from Clemson University; she enjoys spending leisure time with her |
|
|
family and working in her garden, and she is an active member of the |
|
|
Georgetown community; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Throughout her years of dedicated service, |
|
|
Dr. Therese Shelton has exemplified the qualities that are the |
|
|
hallmarks of a great professor, and she has earned the respect and |
|
|
admiration of colleagues and students alike; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Therese Shelton on receiving |
|
|
the Ron Barnes Distinguished Service to Students Award and extend |
|
|
to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Dr. Shelton as an expression of high regard by the |
|
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
