R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, City Marshal Elias T. Mussett Jr. of the Corpus |
|
Christi Police Department lost his life in the line of duty on May |
|
6, 1892, and his service and sacrifice will not soon be forgotten; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, The descendent of a founder of Corpus Christi, Elias |
|
Mussett was elected twice as city marshal, and shortly after his |
|
reelection in 1892, he rode with his daughter, Lillian, at the front |
|
of the city's annual Cinco de Mayo parade; as the festivities were |
|
winding down early the following morning, he was making one last |
|
patrol when he was shot by another police officer, who had |
|
threatened to kill the marshal during the recent election; and |
|
WHEREAS, The first Corpus Christi officer to be killed in the |
|
line of duty, Marshal Mussett was buried in his family's plot in |
|
Rose Hill Cemetery, and the entire city shut down and came out for |
|
his funeral; and |
|
WHEREAS, Our state and nation benefit immeasurably from the |
|
courage and commitment of law enforcement professionals such as |
|
Elias Mussett, who willingly place themselves in harm's way each |
|
day to safeguard the lives and property of their fellow citizens; |
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life and exemplary service of |
|
City Marshal Elias T. Mussett Jr. of the Corpus Christi Police |
|
Department. |
