R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, City Marshal Elias T. Mussett Jr. of the Corpus
  Christi Police Department lost his life in the line of duty on May
  6, 1892, and his service and sacrifice will not soon be forgotten;
  and
         WHEREAS, The descendent of a founder of Corpus Christi, Elias
  Mussett was elected twice as city marshal, and shortly after his
  reelection in 1892, he rode with his daughter, Lillian, at the front
  of the city's annual Cinco de Mayo parade; as the festivities were
  winding down early the following morning, he was making one last
  patrol when he was shot by another police officer, who had
  threatened to kill the marshal during the recent election; and
         WHEREAS, The first Corpus Christi officer to be killed in the
  line of duty, Marshal Mussett was buried in his family's plot in
  Rose Hill Cemetery, and the entire city shut down and came out for
  his funeral; and
         WHEREAS, Our state and nation benefit immeasurably from the
  courage and commitment of law enforcement professionals such as
  Elias Mussett, who willingly place themselves in harm's way each
  day to safeguard the lives and property of their fellow citizens;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life and exemplary service of
  City Marshal Elias T. Mussett Jr. of the Corpus Christi Police
  Department.
