R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, For 175 years, residents of Galveston have come
  together to celebrate their faith at First Presbyterian Church; and
         WHEREAS, First Presbyterian was established on January 1,
  1840, by the Reverend John McCullough and 14 congregants; services
  were held in a modest wooden building until construction on the
  current facility began in 1872; built in a popular Romanesque
  Revival style, it has been listed as a Recorded Texas Historic
  Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places; and
         WHEREAS, The first church to be organized in Galveston, it
  has undergone numerous restorations and renovations over the years
  while playing a vital role in the community and providing its
  members with myriad opportunities for spiritual growth,
  fellowship, and outreach; it survived a fire in 1885 that destroyed
  more than 500 structures, and it withstood the Great Galveston
  Hurricane of 1900 as well as other major hurricanes in 1961 and
  2008; and
         WHEREAS, First Presbyterian Church serves as a source of
  inspiration and guidance to those who worship there, and its
  continued existence is a testament to the unwavering commitment of
  its members and clergy, both past and present; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 175th anniversary of the
  founding of First Presbyterian Church and extend to the
  congregation and clergy sincere best wishes for the future; and, be
  it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
