R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, For 175 years, residents of Galveston have come |
|
together to celebrate their faith at First Presbyterian Church; and |
|
WHEREAS, First Presbyterian was established on January 1, |
|
1840, by the Reverend John McCullough and 14 congregants; services |
|
were held in a modest wooden building until construction on the |
|
current facility began in 1872; built in a popular Romanesque |
|
Revival style, it has been listed as a Recorded Texas Historic |
|
Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places; and |
|
WHEREAS, The first church to be organized in Galveston, it |
|
has undergone numerous restorations and renovations over the years |
|
while playing a vital role in the community and providing its |
|
members with myriad opportunities for spiritual growth, |
|
fellowship, and outreach; it survived a fire in 1885 that destroyed |
|
more than 500 structures, and it withstood the Great Galveston |
|
Hurricane of 1900 as well as other major hurricanes in 1961 and |
|
2008; and |
|
WHEREAS, First Presbyterian Church serves as a source of |
|
inspiration and guidance to those who worship there, and its |
|
continued existence is a testament to the unwavering commitment of |
|
its members and clergy, both past and present; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 175th anniversary of the |
|
founding of First Presbyterian Church and extend to the |
|
congregation and clergy sincere best wishes for the future; and, be |
|
it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
