R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Former McLennan Community College player and NBA |
|
great Vinnie Johnson is being inducted into the NJCAA Men's |
|
Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as a member of the Class |
|
of 2015; and |
|
WHEREAS, An accomplished basketball player out of Franklin |
|
D. Roosevelt High School in Brooklyn, New York, Vinnie Johnson |
|
arrived at McLennan Community College in 1975; he became a star for |
|
the Highlanders, earning All-American honors in each of his two |
|
seasons at the school and leading his team to the NJCAA national |
|
tournament in 1977; and |
|
WHEREAS, For his final two years of college eligibility, |
|
Mr. Johnson transferred to Baylor University, where he continued |
|
his exceptional play; he was named an NCAA Second Team All-American |
|
after an impressive junior campaign, and he repeated that feat the |
|
following year while leading the Southwest Conference in scoring; |
|
he ranks among the top scorers in school history, and he holds the |
|
Baylor records for career scoring average and most points scored in |
|
a single game with 50; and |
|
WHEREAS, This gifted athlete was selected by the Seattle |
|
Supersonics with the seventh overall pick in the 1979 NBA Draft, and |
|
he quickly gained a reputation as one of the league's most tenacious |
|
rebounding guards; traded to the Detroit Pistons in 1981, he became |
|
a key member of the team's legendary "Bad Boys" lineup and earned |
|
the nickname "Microwave" for his ability to come off the bench and |
|
ignite the offense; widely considered one of the top sixth-man |
|
players of his era, he helped lead the Pistons to an NBA |
|
championship in 1989, and his last-second jumper in game five of the |
|
1990 finals secured the franchise's second consecutive title; he |
|
went on to spend one season with the San Antonio Spurs before |
|
retiring from the game in 1992; his No. 15 jersey was retired by the |
|
Pistons in 1994, in honor of his outstanding contributions to the |
|
team; and |
|
WHEREAS, Vinnie Johnson used his years at McLennan Community |
|
College as a foundation for further success in the college and |
|
professional ranks, and he is indeed a fitting recipient of this |
|
prestigious hall of fame honor; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Vinnie Johnson on his induction |
|
into the NJCAA Men's Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame |
|
and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it |
|
further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Johnson as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
