R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The Westside Business Association is hosting its
  third annual Cinco de Mayo fund-raiser in Corpus Christi on May 1,
  2015, and this event provides an ideal opportunity to recognize the
  group for 36 years of service to the community; and
         WHEREAS, Founded in 1979, the WBA is a nonprofit organization
  that focuses on economic development, education, and cultural
  heritage; the group's first project in 1981 involved securing
  nearly $10 million from the State of Texas for a crossover on
  Highway 44; subsequently, it obtained a $500,000 grant to build the
  facility now known as the Antonio E. Garcia Arts and Education
  Center; and
         WHEREAS, The association has undertaken many beautification
  projects, and it has raised awareness of the city's rich history
  with the placement of statues representing such notables as Spanish
  explorer Captain Alonso Álvarez de Pineda and early settler Captain
  Blas María de la Garza Falcón; committed to helping young Texans,
  the WBA distributes holiday gifts annually to children in need, and
  it sponsors 13 Cub Scout troops; its charitable initiatives also
  benefit the Girl Scouts and Little League, among other
  organizations; and
         WHEREAS, Over the years, the WBA has given steadfast support
  to local elementary schools, and it offers scholarships through the
  Education is Our Freedom Program; it has received both the College
  Readiness Award and the Incentives in Achievement Award from the
  Corpus Christi Independent School District; and
         WHEREAS, The Westside Business Association has contributed
  significantly to the prosperity of Corpus Christi, and it has made a
  lasting, positive difference in the quality of life enjoyed by area
  residents; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate the Westside Business Association
  on its 36th anniversary and extend to the organization best wishes
  for a memorable 2015 Cinco de Mayo celebration; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
