  H.R. No. 2042

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, The Canadian High School boys' basketball team
reached the pinnacle of success by winning the University
Interscholastic League 2A state championship on March 14, 2015, at
the Alamodome in San Antonio; and
WHEREAS, The Wildcats finished with a record of 21 wins and
just 1 defeat, and their impressive run through the postseason
included victories over Claude, Panhandle, Smyer, and Farwell High
Schools to clinch Canadian's first trip to the UIL state tournament
  since 1945; and
WHEREAS, In the 2A semifinals, the Wildcats jumped out to a
double-digit halftime lead over the squad from Martin's Mill High
School and went on to record a 68-62 win; that set the stage for the
title game, where Canadian matched up against the top-ranked team
from Big Sandy High School in a hard-fought contest that featured 4
ties and 10 lead changes; trailing by two points entering the fourth
quarter, the Wildcats took the lead for good on a three-pointer by
senior guard Braiden Galla with just under five minutes to play and
closed out a 68-60 triumph with clutch free-throw shooting down the
stretch; the victory was all the more special because it earned
Canadian High School its first state championship in the sport; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Galla was named the title game Most Valuable
Player after scoring 17 points and hauling in 3 rebounds, while
teammates Sawyer Cook and Cameron Copley joined him on the
All-Tournament Team; excelling with a true team effort, the
Wildcats also received essential contributions throughout the
season from the other members of the roster: Caleb Davis, Tanner
Schafer, Ethan Lusk, Cooper Trolinger, Matthew Lynch, Branden
Carson, Trae Dwyer, Cory Chidester, Corbin Douthitt, Cody Gill,
Cody Wolfe, Tyler Richardson, Alexander Cervantes, Manny Ramsey,
  and Bryce Chidester; and
WHEREAS, These dedicated competitors were ably guided by head
coach Andy Copley and assistant coaches Jeff Isom, Hayden Merket,
and Tim Fletcher; additional support was provided by managers Ben
Bryant, Reagan Cochran, and Josh Culwell, trainer Brian Mullins,
statistician Jamie Copley, and videographer Gage Greenhouse; and
WHEREAS, Winning a state championship is the goal of every
high school athlete; the hard work and skill demonstrated by the
Canadian High School players have enabled them to realize that
dream, and they will treasure the memory of this outstanding
accomplishment for many years to come; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate the Canadian High School boys'
basketball team on winning the 2015 UIL 2A state championship and
extend to the team's players, coaches, and staff sincere best

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
