R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The United States is facing a growing obesity
  epidemic that affects the health and quality of life of millions of
  citizens; and
         WHEREAS, More than a third of all American adults are obese,
  and the rate of childhood obesity has nearly tripled over the past
  quarter-century; these alarming findings are disproportionately
  reflected in certain racial and ethnic minority groups, especially
  those from low-income households; and
         WHEREAS, Obesity increases the risk of numerous medical
  conditions, including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure,
  type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and other chronic diseases, and
  approximately 300,000 deaths per year may be attributable to the
  condition; and
         WHEREAS, The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the
  United States is almost $150 billion; in Texas alone, obesity costs
  businesses about $10 billion each year, and that number is
  projected to triple by 2030 if we do not take action; and
         WHEREAS, It is incumbent on the State of Texas to join in the
  fight against obesity, and by encouraging initiatives relating to
  weight management, we can stem rising health care costs and help
  ensure a healthy future for all Texans; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize the month of September 2015 as Texas
  Obesity Awareness Month and recognize the initiatives addressing
  the contributing causes of obesity, including metabolic, genetic,
  emotional, physiological, behavioral, environmental, cultural, and
  socioeconomic factors.
