R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Verna George Brown Mitchell was inducted into the |
|
African American Educators Hall of Fame on April 18, 2015; and |
|
WHEREAS, The hall of fame is part of the African American |
|
Education Archives and History Program, which since its founding in |
|
2002 has focused on the vital role that education plays in the |
|
African American experience in Dallas County; the organization |
|
preserves important artifacts, documents, visual images, and oral |
|
accounts, and its African American Educators Hall of Fame raises |
|
public awareness of the significant contributions made by teachers, |
|
administrators, librarians, and others; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Mitchell worked as a teacher and principal of a |
|
number of Dallas ISD schools before assuming the role of district |
|
administrator, where she supported operations in the East Oak Cliff |
|
subdistrict and was the program manager for the Office of |
|
Discipline and Student Services; she retired after 35 years of |
|
dedicated service, but she continued to encourage students and held |
|
leadership positions with Dallas Can Academy and Mount Hebron |
|
Christian Academy; and |
|
WHEREAS, Throughout her notable tenure, Ms. Mitchell oversaw |
|
a number of developments in the district, including the |
|
implementation of the after-school program at Thomas Tolbert |
|
Elementary School, for which it earned designation as a national |
|
site for the Lights On Afterschool program; she was selected to |
|
attend The Principals' Center at the Harvard Graduate School of |
|
Education, and Governor Ann Richards appointed her to serve on the |
|
State ESEA committee; and |
|
WHEREAS, Through her outstanding accomplishments, Verna |
|
Mitchell has made a positive difference in the lives of countless |
|
Texans, and she may take justifiable pride in this prestigious |
|
accolade; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Verna George Brown Mitchell on her |
|
induction into the African American Educators Hall of Fame and |
|
extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Ms. Mitchell as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
