R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Area residents gathered together at the Keach Family |
|
Library in Robstown on April 15, 2015, to witness the dedication of |
|
a room honoring Betty Jean Longoria, a former member of the Nueces |
|
County Commissioners Court; and |
|
WHEREAS, Assuming her post in 2002, Ms. Longoria was the |
|
first elected Hispanic woman to serve on the court since its |
|
establishment; she was returned to office for a second term in 2006, |
|
and as the commissioner for Precinct Two, she worked diligently to |
|
represent the interests of her constituents in Agua Dulce, |
|
Petronila, Banquete, Bishop, and western Corpus Christi; among her |
|
most significant achievements as commissioner was her contribution |
|
to the establishment of the Coastal Bend Veterans Cemetery, which |
|
was the culmination of some six years of planning and coordination |
|
on her part; and |
|
WHEREAS, Before taking her place on the court, Ms. Longoria |
|
was the first Hispanic woman elected to the Corpus Christi City |
|
Council, where she served for 10 years, and she became the first |
|
Hispanic woman on the board of trustees for the Tuloso-Midway |
|
Independent School District, spending six years in that position; |
|
she has been a passionate advocate of education and has served as a |
|
student mentor at several area schools; and |
|
WHEREAS, Deeply engaged in her community, Commissioner |
|
Longoria has generously given of her time as a board member of the |
|
National Conference for Community and Justice, Goodwill Industries |
|
of South Texas, the Westside Business Association, the Nueces |
|
County Community Action Agency, the Hispanic Women's Network of |
|
Texas, and the Corpus Christi and Corpus Christi Hispanic Chambers |
|
of Commerce; more recently, this distinguished woman has been |
|
active on the boards of the South Texas Botanical Gardens, Big |
|
Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas, the Friends of the Corpus |
|
Christi Public Libraries, and the South Texas Institute for the |
|
Arts; and |
|
WHEREAS, Commissioner Longoria has earned awards and |
|
recognitions from such notable civic organizations as the Hispanic |
|
Women's Network, the Westside Business Association, the National |
|
Conference for Community and Justice, the Corpus Christi Hispanic |
|
Chamber of Commerce, and Leadership Corpus Christi; and |
|
WHEREAS, A native of Corpus Christi, Ms. Longoria graduated |
|
from Roy Miller High School; for more than three decades, she and |
|
her husband, Alfredo Longoria Jr., owned and operated L&M |
|
Fabricators, and she also ran her own business as an independent |
|
landman for 16 years; she and Mr. Longoria are the parents of four |
|
sons, Alfred Joe, Michael, Stephen, and Paul, and are parishioners |
|
at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church; and |
|
WHEREAS, Betty Jean Longoria's dedication and dynamic |
|
leadership have made a profound difference in the community she |
|
calls home, and she is indeed deserving of recognition for her |
|
myriad contributions to Nueces County; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commend Betty Jean Longoria for her exemplary |
|
career in public service and commemorate the dedication of the |
|
Betty Jean Longoria Multipurpose Room at the Nueces County Keach |
|
Family Library; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Commissioner Longoria as an expression of high regard |
|
by the Texas House of Representatives. |
