H.R. No. 2412

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, Nucor Corporation is celebrating the 40th
  anniversary of its Nucor Steel--Texas plant in Jewett during 2015;
  and
WHEREAS, Established in 1975, the Jewett facility was one of
the first electric arc furnace plants in the United States; the
electric arc process for melting and recycling scrap steel is more
cost-effective than integrated iron and steel production with blast
furnaces, and it significantly reduces pollution; and
WHEREAS, Nucor was an industry leader in the shift from
refining to recycling as the primary source of steel, and today, it
is the nation's largest steel producer and largest recycler,
handling approximately 19 million tons of scrap metal each year; on
an annual basis, its three Texas divisions have a recycling
capacity of 1.5 million tons of steel and a production capacity of
more than 1.6 million tons; the company employs approximately 1,100
  Texans at these plants; and
WHEREAS, In 2010, the Nucor divisions in Jewett, Terrell, and
Grapeland were awarded OSHA Voluntary Protection Program Star
Status from the federal Occupational Safety and Health
Administration; moreover, Nucor Steel--Texas earned a Texas
Environmental Excellence Award for its efforts in resource
conservation, waste reduction, and pollution prevention; and
WHEREAS, Nucor Steel--Texas has contributed significantly to
the prosperity of Jewett over the past four decades, and it is
indeed fitting to recognize this milestone in the history of the
  company; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Nucor Corporation on the 40th
anniversary of its Nucor Steel--Texas plant in Jewett and extend to
all those associated with the company sincere best wishes for
continued success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the company as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
