R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Shawn Flanagan has built an exceptional record of
  success as head coach and director of the Texas A&M
  University--Corpus Christi track and field program over the course
  of his outstanding 15-year tenure; and
         WHEREAS, Coach Flanagan graduated with a bachelor's degree
  from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and a master's degree
  from The University of Texas at San Antonio, and he has earned Level
  2 certification in distances from USA Track & Field; while a
  student, he qualified for the NCAA national championship four times
  in cross-country and twice in track, and he ran in the U.S. Olympic
  Trials in 1980; and
         WHEREAS, Beginning his career in coaching at UTSA,
  Mr. Flanagan helped establish the university's track and field
  program in 1981 and took the reins as head coach three years later;
  under his guidance, the Roadrunners garnered 18 titles in
  cross-country and track, in addition to becoming the first squad
  from the Southland Conference to win an NCAA regional title in
  cross-country; the team also set a conference record by placing
  19th at an NCAA national championship; in 1997, Coach Flanagan
  became head coach of the men's cross-country team at The University
  of Texas at Austin, where he led the Longhorns to three Big 12
  titles; and
         WHEREAS, Shawn Flanagan launched the track and field program
  at Texas A&M University--Corpus Christi in 2000, and since that
  time, the Islanders have captured 11 conference team championships,
  while individual members have earned numerous conference titles as
  well as three NCAA national championships, seven NCAA All-American
  Awards, and four NCAA Academic All-American Team honors; Coach
  Flanagan has further distinguished himself by directing the
  Islanders Splash, an annual cross-country meet attended by
  thousands of collegiate, high school, and middle school runners;
  and
         WHEREAS, Repeatedly honored for his ability to inspire his
  student-athletes, this esteemed Texan has been recognized as either
  an NCAA Regional or Conference Coach of the Year more than 30 times,
  and he was inducted into the UW-Platteville Athletic Hall of Fame in
  1999; and
         WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Shawn Flanagan is blessed with
  the love and support of his wife, Beverly Johnson, and their son,
  Solomon; and
         WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Texas A&M
  University--Corpus Christi track and field program has greatly
  benefited from Shawn Flanagan's dedication, professionalism, and
  commitment to excellence, and his teams are sure to be a further
  source of pride and excitement for Islanders fans in the years to
  come; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby honor Shawn Flanagan for his exceptional
  contributions to the track and field program at Texas A&M
  University--Corpus Christi and extend to him sincere best wishes
  for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Coach Flanagan as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
