R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Attorney and community leader Derrick Mitchell of |
|
Houston has been appointed by Governor Greg Abbott to the Board of |
|
Regents of Texas Southern University; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Mitchell will serve as one of the nine regents |
|
of TSU, one of the most diverse institutions of higher learning in |
|
Texas, with more than 9,700 graduate and undergraduate students |
|
from around the world; Mr. Mitchell's six-year term will end in |
|
February 2021; and |
|
WHEREAS, Since earning his bachelor's degree in finance from |
|
the University of Houston and his law degree from the University of |
|
Houston Law Center, Derrick Mitchell has enjoyed a successful |
|
career as an attorney; he is a partner in the public law section of |
|
the Houston office of Bracewell and Giuliani LLP, where he works as |
|
a bond counsel, disclosure counsel, and underwriter's counsel; he |
|
also has an extensive background in corporate and business |
|
transactions; and |
|
WHEREAS, In addition to his professional responsibilities, |
|
Mr. Mitchell serves as board counsel to a number of community |
|
colleges, and he is a member of the executive committee of the |
|
Houston chapter of the National Black MBA Association as well as a |
|
board member of Scenic Houston, Row House Community Development |
|
Corporation, and Harris County Improvement District No. 8; he has |
|
previously served as chair of the Greater Houston Partnership Local |
|
Relations Committee and as a member of the Texas Securities Board; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Higher education in the Lone Star State benefits |
|
greatly from the leadership and dedication of public-spirited |
|
individuals such as Derrick Mitchell, and he will undoubtedly be a |
|
strong and dynamic advocate for the university; now, therefore, be |
|
it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Derrick Mitchell on his |
|
appointment to the Texas Southern University Board of Regents and |
|
extend to him sincere best wishes for success in his important work; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Mitchell as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
