R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life came to a close with the |
|
passing of Dr. Eugene B. Smith of College Station on April 21, |
|
2015, at the age of 83; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born to Robert and Thelma Smith in Houston on |
|
December 28, 1931, "Gene" Smith spent his formative years in |
|
Nederland; he attended Texas A&M University, graduating with a |
|
bachelor's degree, and went on to join the U.S. Army Signal Corps; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, After completing his military service, he moved to |
|
Houston to work for IBM; he then went back to Texas A&M, where he |
|
earned his master's degree and Ph.D. and subsequently found a |
|
position as an associate professor in the school of business; in |
|
1976, he left Texas and moved to Silver Spring, Maryland, to become |
|
a management analyst for the United States Department of |
|
Agriculture; he returned seven years later and took a job with the |
|
Texas Agricultural Extension Service in College Station, working |
|
there for more than a decade until his retirement in 1994; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Smith married the love of his life, the former |
|
Altha Hall, on June 22, 1957, and the couple shared a rewarding |
|
union that spanned 57 years; they were the proud parents of a |
|
daughter, Kimberly, and with the passing years, they had the |
|
pleasure of watching their family grow to include two |
|
granddaughters, Emily and Melissa; Dr. Smith enjoyed spending time |
|
with his family and friends, playing golf, and traveling with his |
|
wife; and |
|
WHEREAS, This warm and caring gentleman touched the lives of |
|
many during his journey on this earth, and those who were privileged |
|
to know him will always remember him with great admiration and |
|
affection; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Eugene B. Smith |
|
and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his |
|
wife, Altha Smith; to his daughter, Kim Hord, and her husband, |
|
Allen; to his granddaughters, Emily and Melissa; to his brother, |
|
Jerry Lynn Smith, and his wife, Judy; and to his other relatives and |
|
many friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Eugene |
|
B. "Gene" Smith. |
