R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, For the past half-century, Doris Padgett of Mesquite |
|
has greatly benefited her fellow citizens through her dedicated |
|
service as the founding librarian of the Sunnyvale Public Library; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Padgett was hired to run the library when it was |
|
established in 1965, and at the age of 90, she continues to assist |
|
its operations on a half-time basis; although the facility is |
|
small, she has worked tirelessly to ensure it meets the needs of |
|
area residents, and in addition to books and other media, it offers |
|
computers and a children's play space; and |
|
WHEREAS, In the 1960s, the Sunnyvale Garden Club started a |
|
petition drive for a library, and one of the members encouraged |
|
Ms. Padgett, an avid reader, to apply for the job of sole librarian; |
|
she was hired and quickly taught herself how to run the facility, |
|
which had an annual book budget of $5,000 and occupied a 1912 |
|
schoolhouse; in 1983, she guided the move to the present location in |
|
a building shared with the fire station; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Padgett ran the library singlehandedly until 10 |
|
years ago, when another employee was added; over the years, she has |
|
made it a welcoming, quiet oasis for book lovers and those |
|
conducting research in the stacks or on computers; many local |
|
patrons choose it over other nearby facilities because she is their |
|
favorite librarian; and |
|
WHEREAS, The Sunnyvale Public Library plays a vital role in |
|
the life of the community, and Doris Padgett has contributed |
|
immeasurably to the vitality of this institution through her |
|
skilled and devoted stewardship; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor Doris Padgett for her 50 years of service |
|
as the founding librarian of the Sunnyvale Public Library and |
|
extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Ms. Padgett as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
