R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, In 2011, Del Mar College in Corpus Christi added an
  associate's degree in Mexican-American Studies to better serve area
  residents; and
         WHEREAS, Students in the program learn to summarize
  demographic trends, to recognize the main elements of
  Mexican-American aesthetics in literature, language, music, visual
  arts, and cultural practices and to demonstrate a comprehensive
  understanding of the historical, political, and contemporary
  experiences of Mexican-American men and women in South Texas and
  throughout the United States; designated as fully transferable to
  Texas public colleges and universities by the Texas Higher
  Education Coordinating Board, courses further prepare students by
  equipping them with oral, writing, and research skills; and
         WHEREAS, Students take these classes for a variety of
  reasons, with some committed to earning the associate's degree in
  Mexican-American Studies and others interested in fulfilling
  creative arts, language, social sciences, or American history
  requirements for other majors; a number of students choose to
  enroll in these courses to earn college credit through the Early
  College Program, to transfer to a four-year university, to become
  more competitive in the job market, or to explore the topic through
  the Career and Community Education Program; and
         WHEREAS, Dedicated to engaging the community, the program
  also hosts events that expand awareness of the Mexican-American
  population and major demographic changes in the nation; to that
  end, the Mexican-American Studies Program cosponsored a video
  preview and discussion panel on the PBS documentary series "Latino
  Americans" with KEDT-TV in 2013; the following year, it went on to
  sponsor the first Del Mar College Mexican-American Studies Program
  Summer Seminar; and
         WHEREAS, The Del Mar College Mexican-American Studies
  Program is playing a vital role in the preservation and celebration
  of the Lone Star State's Hispanic heritage, and it is indeed fitting
  to honor the initiative for its support of the college's emphasis as
  a Hispanic-Serving Institution; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize the Del Mar College Mexican-American
  Studies Program for its contributions to the community and extend
  to all those associated with the program sincere best wishes for
  continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Del Mar College as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
