R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, David Smolik is retiring as principal of Sacred
  Heart Catholic School in Hallettsville after 45 years of exemplary
  service in education; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Smolik began his career as a junior high
  teacher, working in the Weslaco and North Forest Independent School
  Districts; he then went on to take positions as assistant principal
  of Northwood Middle School and Smiley High School and as principal
  of Kirby Middle School; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Smolik moved back to his hometown in 1981 to
  teach world history at Hallettsville High School before becoming
  principal of his alma mater, Sacred Heart Catholic School, in 1984;
  during his three decades as the school's principal, he has helped
  expand its academic programs while bringing about numerous
  additions and improvements to the campus; and
         WHEREAS, Over the course of his tenure, he has consistently
  demonstrated a keen interest in the endeavors of his students,
  speaking with them as they come to school, visiting the classrooms,
  cheering them on at extracurricular events, and keeping in touch
  even after their high school graduation; he is known for proudly
  displaying his Sacred Heart pride through his trademark blue vest
  and for presenting royal blue Sacred Heart pencils to lucky
  recipients; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Smolik has also given generously of his time and
  talents to such worthy organizations as the Hallettsville Lions
  Club, the Fine Arts Executive Committee of the Texas Association of
  Private and Parochial Schools, and the Knights of Columbus, which
  he has served as youth director; in addition, he acts as
  extraordinary minister in his parish; and
         WHEREAS, In recognition of his commitment to his students and
  to the larger community, Mr. Smolik has received the Lions Club
  Melvin Jones Foundation Award as well as the National Outstanding
  Educator Award for Catholic Secondary Education from the National
  Catholic Education Association; and
         WHEREAS, Through his dedication, his talent as an educator
  and administrator, and his personal concern for others, David
  Smolik has made a positive and lasting difference in the lives of
  his students and their families, and he may take well-deserved
  pride in his outstanding record of achievement; now, therefore, be
  it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate David Smolik on his retirement as
  principal of Sacred Heart Catholic School and extend to him sincere
  best wishes for the future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Smolik as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
