R E S O L U T I O N

|
WHEREAS, The Mosquito Control Division of Harris County |
|
|
Public Health and Environmental Services is marking its 50th |
|
|
anniversary in 2015; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, This critical unit was established in 1965 in |
|
|
response to an outbreak of St. Louis encephalitis in the Harris |
|
|
County area the previous year; originally organized as a county |
|
|
department, Mosquito Control became a division of Harris County |
|
|
Public Health and Environmental Services in 1995; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Nationally recognized for its efforts, Mosquito |
|
|
Control was the first group to document the existence of the Asian |
|
|
tiger mosquito in the continental United States, a discovery it |
|
|
made in 1985; the division employs sophisticated research methods |
|
|
and technologies to prevent and control a wide array of ailments |
|
|
spread by mosquitos, such as West Nile virus, St. Louis |
|
|
encephalitis, dengue fever, and chikungunya; moreover, the unit has |
|
|
partnered with a number of entities, including universities, the |
|
|
Houston Museum of Natural Science, and the Centers for Disease |
|
|
Control and Prevention, to find effective ways to deal with |
|
|
mosquito-borne diseases and the risks they pose to public health; |
|
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Mosquito Control Division |
|
|
has contributed significantly to protecting the health and |
|
|
well-being of Harris County residents, and it is indeed fitting |
|
|
that the division's staff be commended on their outstanding work; |
|
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Mosquito |
|
|
Control Division of Harris County Public Health and Environmental |
|
|
Services and extend to its staff sincere best wishes for continued |
|
|
success; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for the Mosquito Control Division as an expression of high |
|
|
regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
