R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Dr. David E. Daniel is concluding an exemplary
  tenure as president of The University of Texas at Dallas on July 1,
  2015, in order to take on a new role as deputy chancellor and chief
  operating officer of The University of Texas System; and
         WHEREAS, An alumnus of The University of Texas at Austin,
  where he earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in
  engineering, Dr. Daniel served on the UT faculty for 16 years
  before accepting a position as dean of engineering at the
  University of Illinois in 1996; he ably served in that role until
  2005, when he was named the fourth president of The University of
  Texas at Dallas; and
         WHEREAS, During his decade-long tenure at UT Dallas,
  Dr. Daniel has overseen the dramatic growth of the institution,
  which has increased enrollment by 60 percent and has expanded the
  faculty from 350 to more than 530 members; the school has also added
  50 academic programs, tripled research expenditures, and initiated
  or completed an estimated $1 billion in construction of new
  buildings and infrastructure; consistently hailed as a best value
  by Kiplinger's Personal Finance and the Princeton Review, the
  university was ranked in the top tier of the 2010 list of Best
  National Universities published by U.S. News & World Report; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Daniel further distinguished himself as
  president of the Academy of Medicine, Engineering, and Science of
  Texas in 2009 and as chair of the American Society of Civil
  Engineers External Review Panel for three years; a member of the
  National Academy of Engineering since 2000, he was appointed by
  that organization and the National Research Council to a committee
  that investigated the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in
  the Gulf of Mexico, and today he serves as a member of the board of
  directors of the Sandia Corporation and on the governing council of
  the NAE; and
         WHEREAS, Repeatedly recognized by the American Society of
  Civil Engineers for his many professional achievements, Dr. Daniel
  was presented with the organization's highest honor, the Norman
  Medal, in 1975 and was selected for the J. James R. Croes Medal in
  1984 and 2000, and he also earned the 2007 Presidents' Award and the
  2010 Outstanding Projects and Leaders Award for Education; in
  addition, he was named a 2009 Texan of the Year finalist by the
  Dallas Morning News; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Daniel is bringing a wealth of knowledge and
  expertise to his new position with the UT System, one of the largest
  public university systems in the nation; there, he will assist in
  the formulation and implementation of the system's major goals and
  manage the personnel and daily operations of the UT System
  Administration; and
         WHEREAS, David Daniel's vision and leadership have
  contributed immeasurably to the stature of UT Dallas over the past
  decade, and the energy and commitment he brings to his new role will
  surely serve the UT System well; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. David E. Daniel on his
  appointment as deputy chancellor and chief operating officer of The
  University of Texas System and commend him for his outstanding
  service as president of The University of Texas at Dallas; and, be
  it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Dr. Daniel as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
