R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Autumn Boelen and Sheridan Stiteler of Saint Jo High |
|
School earned top honors in the Friends of the Texas Governor's |
|
Mansion 2014-2015 It's Your History Contest; and |
|
WHEREAS, Founded in 1979, the Friends of the Texas Governor's |
|
Mansion is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the |
|
iconic Greek Revival home that has housed Texas governors since |
|
1856; in addition to its efforts in behalf of the Governor's |
|
Mansion, the group sponsors an annual competition for high school |
|
students that encourages them to develop greater awareness of their |
|
Texas heritage; and |
|
WHEREAS, Under the guidance of Saint Jo faculty member Shelly |
|
McAninch, Ms. Boelen and Ms. Stiteler entered the contest and won |
|
the Best Overall Award in the group category for their noteworthy |
|
presentation on the old Montague County Jail; now a Recorded Texas |
|
Historic Landmark, the jail was completed in 1927 and featured |
|
living quarters for the jailer and cells for male, female, and |
|
juvenile prisoners; during the 53 years that the jail served its |
|
original purpose, it was overseen by numerous sheriffs, including |
|
two female sheriffs, and it housed such notable criminals as Floyd |
|
Hamilton and Rex Beard, who was known as the "Paper Sack Bandit"; |
|
closed in 1980 when a new jail opened across the street, the Old |
|
Jail currently serves as a museum; and |
|
WHEREAS, Through their informative and engaging project, |
|
Autumn Boelen and Sheridan Stiteler have helped others learn more |
|
about the fascinating history of the Lone Star State, and they are a |
|
source of great pride for their school and their community; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Autumn Boelen and Sheridan |
|
Stiteler on their success in the Friends of the Texas Governor's |
|
Mansion It's Your History Contest and extend to them sincere best |
|
wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Ms. Boelen and Ms. Stiteler as an expression of high |
|
regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
