R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Locally owned and operated businesses play a vital |
|
role in the prosperity of the Lone Star State, and those enterprises |
|
that build a record of dependability and longevity enjoy a special |
|
degree of esteem in their communities; and |
|
WHEREAS, The Atkinson Candy Company was founded in downtown |
|
Lufkin in 1932 by B. E. and Mabel Atkinson; over the decades, it has |
|
attained notable success with its assortment of sweets, and the |
|
business expanded in 1983 with its acquisition of the San |
|
Antonio-based Judson Candy Company; and |
|
WHEREAS, Today, the enterprise is owned and operated by the |
|
third and fourth generations of the Atkinson family and is ably led |
|
by its founders' grandson, Eric Atkinson, who has served as |
|
president since 2000; he has earned well-deserved recognition from |
|
the industry by being named the 1990 Candy Man of the Year by the |
|
Southern Candy and Tobacco Association, and he will be inducted |
|
into the Candy Hall of Fame by the National Confectionary Sales |
|
Association in the fall of 2015; and |
|
WHEREAS, For more than eight decades, the Atkinson Candy |
|
Company has held a special place in the life of the Lufkin |
|
community, and all those associated with the enterprise may take |
|
pride in its achievements; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize the Atkinson Candy Company for its |
|
many years in business and extend to the company's owners and staff |
|
sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the company as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
