R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Charities that work to lift children out of poverty |
|
in our nation and around the world will benefit from the first Red |
|
Nose Day to be held in the United States, an observance scheduled |
|
for May 21, 2015; and |
|
WHEREAS, Red Nose Day started in the United Kingdom, where, |
|
for the past 30 years, the fund-raising organization Comic Relief |
|
UK has raised more than £1 billion by bringing people together for |
|
fun and laughter; and |
|
WHEREAS, The first Red Nose Day USA is a program of Comic |
|
Relief, Inc., an independent sister organization of the British |
|
group; people across the nation are encouraged to do something |
|
funny at home, school, or work to raise money for charity, and the |
|
day will culminate in a star-studded, three-hour entertainment |
|
special on the NBC television network; and |
|
WHEREAS, Walgreens is the exclusive retailer of the first Red |
|
Nose Day, and since April 17, Walgreens and Duane Reade pharmacies |
|
across the nation have been selling red clown noses for a dollar |
|
apiece, with the proceeds going to the Red Nose Day Fund; and |
|
WHEREAS, Nonprofit organizations that will benefit from Red |
|
Nose Day include the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, charity: |
|
water, the Children's Health Fund, Feeding America, Gavi, the |
|
Vaccine Alliance, the Global Fund, LIFT, the National Council of La |
|
Raza, the National Urban League, Oxfam America, Save the Children, |
|
and United Way; and |
|
WHEREAS, Bringing Americans of all ages and backgrounds |
|
together in joy and laughter, this fun and festive event is helping |
|
to create positive change in the world through the power of |
|
entertainment; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize May 21, 2015, as Red Nose Day in Texas. |
