R E S O L U T I O N

|
|
WHEREAS, Emily Reyna has demonstrated exceptional compassion |
|
|
and commitment in her efforts to assist children and adults with |
|
|
developmental disabilities, and in so doing, she has brightened the |
|
|
lives of a great many people; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A Houston native, Emily Reyna first became involved |
|
|
with Down syndrome in the 1970s while helping to care for her |
|
|
neighbor's baby daughter, who was born with DS; Ms. Reyna later |
|
|
gave birth to a son with Down syndrome, and she has since dedicated |
|
|
herself to encouraging increased support, respect, acceptance, and |
|
|
inclusion for persons with developmental disabilities and to |
|
|
galvanizing others around the goal of providing a healthy |
|
|
environment for adults with special needs to live |
|
|
semi-independently; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Reaching out to the Hispanic community, Ms. Reyna |
|
|
has hosted support groups in her home and paid personal visits to |
|
|
individuals in need of advice for managing day-to-day challenges |
|
|
associated with Down syndrome; moreover, she has attended a number |
|
|
of conferences pertaining to the condition, volunteered with the |
|
|
Down Syndrome Association, and contributed her time and expertise |
|
|
to other initiatives that benefit persons with developmental |
|
|
disabilities and their loved ones; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Those Texans who step forward to make a positive |
|
|
difference in the world around them are indeed deserving of our |
|
|
appreciation, and through her tireless advocacy for the members of |
|
|
this vulnerable population and their families, Emily Reyna has |
|
|
earned the admiration of all who know her; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby honor Emily Reyna for her lifelong service to |
|
|
persons with developmental disabilities and extend to her sincere |
|
|
best wishes for continued success with her many good works; and, be |
|
|
it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Ms. Reyna as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
|
House of Representatives. |
