R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, In a gesture of kindness that has won the hearts of
  many, Senior Corporal Damon Cole of the Dallas Police Department
  traveled nearly 700 miles to pay a special visit to a young boy with
  cancer; and
         WHEREAS, A member of the department since 2008, Corporal Cole
  serves as a volunteer with Heroes, Cops and Kids, a nonprofit group
  of Dallas police officers who don superhero costumes and appear at
  parades, school assemblies, and other events as a way to reach out
  to children; officers take part in the endeavor during their
  off-duty hours and pay for costumes and other expenses with their
  own funds; and
         WHEREAS, Corporal Cole was inspired to expand his volunteer
  efforts northward after seeing an online picture of Bryce Schottel,
  who is being treated for lymphoma, wearing a Superman costume for
  Halloween; after making the 11-hour trip to Smithton, Illinois, to
  meet the seven-year-old, Corporal Cole arrived on the Schottels'
  doorstep in full Superman attire, much to the elation of young
  Bryce; and
         WHEREAS, The captivating visit included a ride in Corporal
  Cole's "Superman-mobile," a decorated Dodge Charger, and the
  surprise reveal of the officer's other alter ego, "Iron Man";
  Corporal Cole also ventured out to a fund-raiser for Bryce at his
  elementary school; before bidding farewell, he left the delighted
  youngster with an action figure and one of his spare capes as
  mementos of the encounter with his comic book idols; and
         WHEREAS, For an unforgettable few hours, Damon Cole lifted
  the spirits of a child in need, and his selfless actions have made
  him a hero to the Schottel family and a source of inspiration to his
  community and beyond; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby commend Senior Corporal Damon Cole of the Dallas
  Police Department for his heartening deed and extend to him warmest
  best wishes for continued success with his charitable work; and, be
  it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Corporal Cole as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
