R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Naomi Cox Andrews of Pearland has been named the |
|
2015 Alumnus of the Year by Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas |
|
Southern University; and |
|
WHEREAS, A 1983 graduate of the law school, Ms. Andrews has |
|
been involved in the university community for many decades, having |
|
also earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in business |
|
from TSU; highly respected for her leadership and expertise, she |
|
was appointed to the university's board of regents by Governor |
|
Dolph Briscoe in 1974 and was later reappointed by Governor Bill |
|
Clements; today, she is a dedicated member of the alumni board of |
|
Thurgood Marshall School of Law; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Andrews has further distinguished herself |
|
through numerous other accomplishments in the Houston area and |
|
beyond; she helped break down racial barriers in 1961, when she |
|
became the first African American clerical employee at the Houston |
|
Post, and she subsequently became the first African American |
|
secretary at Shell Oil; after moving to California, she taught in |
|
the Compton public schools while her husband, Dr. Rawle Andrews, |
|
was finishing his medical training; and |
|
WHEREAS, Following the couple's return to Houston, |
|
Ms. Andrews helped her husband establish his medical practice, and |
|
she also began taking leadership roles in a wide variety of civic |
|
initiatives; over the years, she has worked in behalf of a number of |
|
community organizations and charitable causes, including Texas Job |
|
Corps Women in Action projects and the fund-raising fashion show of |
|
the Houston Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta; she |
|
presently serves on the board of the Can! Academy Education |
|
Foundation in Dallas, and she chairs the board of the Youth Freedom |
|
Institute at First Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, where she is a |
|
valued congregant; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Andrews has been employed as director of finance |
|
at the Andrews Medical Clinic, as a financial planner for |
|
Ameriprise, and as an assistant auditor for Freestone County, and |
|
she has served as an instructor at Navarro College; she is the |
|
devoted mother of four children, and she takes great pride in her |
|
seven grandchildren; and |
|
WHEREAS, Naomi Cox Andrews has distinguished herself through |
|
her numerous contributions to higher education and to the Houston |
|
community, and this prestigious accolade is a reflection of the |
|
high esteem in which she is held; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Naomi Cox Andrews on her selection |
|
as the 2015 Thurgood Marshall School of Law Alumnus of the Year and |
|
extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Ms. Andrews as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
