  H.R. No. 3365

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, Johnny and Loretta Williams of Houston are
celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on June 6, 2015, and
they may indeed reflect with joy on the rewarding relationship they
  have shared; and
WHEREAS, Johnny E. Williams and the former Loretta
  M. Thompson met in 1962 on the campus of Texas Southern University,
where they were students in the School of Business; their romance
flourished even though he lived in the Fourth Ward and she lived in
the Fifth, and neither owned a car; frequently, he rode the bus to
see her, but since it stopped running at midnight, he often had to
resort to thumbing a ride or else walk the more than eight miles
back home; sometimes his lifelong friend, Bobby Merchant, served as
his driver, anticipating the advent of Uber; when necessary,
Mr. Williams settled for calling his sweetheart from the pay phone
in the emergency room across from his house, gamely conducting a
conversation with sirens wailing in the background; and
WHEREAS, On May 30, 1965, the couple graduated, and they
married a week later; they eventually became the proud parents of
two children, Byron and Kimberly, and over the years they made their
home in a number of cities across the country; today, they are well
settled, but their journey is far from complete, because
Mrs. Williams is not yet satisfied that she has successfully raised
her husband, and she is prepared to commit an undetermined number of
years to his further upbringing; and
WHEREAS, For half a century, Johnny and Loretta Williams have
brought to their marriage laughter, kindness, and devotion, and it
is a pleasure to honor them for their enduring commitment to one
  another; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Johnny and Loretta Williams on
their 50th wedding anniversary and extend to them sincere best
wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Williams as an expression of high regard
by the Texas House of Representatives.
