R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Americans owe a profound debt of gratitude to those
  brave men and women who take up arms in defense of our nation, and
  one such individual is Sergeant Theodore Wellington Jones of League
  City, who served in the U.S. armed forces during World War II; and
         WHEREAS, Born on December 7, 1927, in Reading, Pennsylvania,
  Ted Jones grew up in an orphanage after his mother passed away; in
  1944, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the army and was deployed to
  the European theater to serve as a Browning automatic rifleman in
  the 86th Infantry, 3rd Armor Division, under General George Patton;
  he took part in the Battle of the Bulge and later remained in
  Germany during the occupation, until he was called back to active
  duty in 1950 to train troops heading to fight in Korea; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to his service as an infantryman,
  Sergeant Jones was a member of the All-Army European Boxing Team,
  and in 1950, he became the army's European Featherweight Champion;
  as recognition for his skill in the ring, he was awarded the rank of
  sergeant first class, making him, at age 23, one of the youngest
  field sergeants to serve in Europe; in 1954, he transferred to the
  newly established U.S. Air Force, and he concluded his military
  tenure at the rank of technical sergeant in 1969; and
         WHEREAS, Before formally retiring, Sergeant Jones fulfilled
  a request from the air force to remain on active reserve duty as
  manager of the Ellington Field Club, and the experience he acquired
  in that role proved useful when he managed Field Veterans of Foreign
  Wars Post 8790 in Spring Branch from 1977 to 1981; he has since
  continued to benefit his fellow veterans through his work with the
  American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 490, and the
  Ellington Field Post; moreover, he served the community for 13
  years as a member of the Houston Police Department Crime and
  Investigation Division; and
         WHEREAS, A devoted family man, Ted Jones enjoys the love and
  support of his wife, Geraldine, and he is the proud father of five
  children; and
         WHEREAS, Through his steadfast efforts in war and peacetime,
  Sergeant Jones has exemplified the virtues that define our Greatest
  Generation, and he has earned the lasting respect and admiration of
  his fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby honor Sergeant Theodore Wellington Jones for his
  exemplary service to his nation and to his community and extend to
  him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Sergeant Jones as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
