R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The observance of Law Day on May 1, 2016, provides an |
|
opportunity for Americans to acknowledge the principles of justice |
|
that are essential in preserving the liberties of our nation; and |
|
WHEREAS, In 1958, Law Day was established by President Dwight |
|
D. Eisenhower, and three years later, the United States Congress |
|
issued a joint resolution designating May 1 as the official date for |
|
this celebration of our nation's commitment to the rule of law and |
|
the institutions that uphold it; and |
|
WHEREAS, The annual event is supported today by such |
|
organizations as the American Bar Association, which originated the |
|
concept of a special day to celebrate our legal system; across the |
|
country, thousands of Law Day programs now help youth and adults to |
|
understand how the law keeps us free and how our legal system |
|
strives to achieve justice; the State Bar of Texas sponsors related |
|
activities statewide, and programs are conducted by local bar |
|
groups, courts, schools, and community organizations, among |
|
others; and |
|
WHEREAS, The law provides the strong foundation on which our |
|
great nation is built, and participation in Law Day initiatives |
|
allows Americans to gain a deeper appreciation for the ways in which |
|
our system of justice protects the liberties we hold most dear; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate May 1, 2016, as Law Day and |
|
encourage all Texans to work for the preservation and strengthening |
|
of the rule of law. |
