R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, The observance of Law Day on May 1, 2016, provides an
  opportunity for Americans to acknowledge the principles of justice
  that are essential in preserving the liberties of our nation; and
         WHEREAS, In 1958, Law Day was established by President Dwight
  D. Eisenhower, and three years later, the United States Congress
  issued a joint resolution designating May 1 as the official date for
  this celebration of our nation's commitment to the rule of law and
  the institutions that uphold it; and
         WHEREAS, The annual event is supported today by such
  organizations as the American Bar Association, which originated the
  concept of a special day to celebrate our legal system; across the
  country, thousands of Law Day programs now help youth and adults to
  understand how the law keeps us free and how our legal system
  strives to achieve justice; the State Bar of Texas sponsors related
  activities statewide, and programs are conducted by local bar
  groups, courts, schools, and community organizations, among
  others; and
         WHEREAS, The law provides the strong foundation on which our
  great nation is built, and participation in Law Day initiatives
  allows Americans to gain a deeper appreciation for the ways in which
  our system of justice protects the liberties we hold most dear; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate May 1, 2016, as Law Day and
  encourage all Texans to work for the preservation and strengthening
  of the rule of law.
