H.R. No. 3554

R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The observance of Father's Day on June 21, 2015,
provides an appropriate opportunity to reflect on the essence of
what it means to be a father; and
WHEREAS, The original Father's Day observance was held on
July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia, after the Monongah Mining
Disaster killed 250 fathers; a Father's Day celebration, mirroring
the event in West Virginia, was held in Spokane, Washington, in 1910
for a single father who raised his six children without a mother,
and it soon became a statewide tradition; this holiday was not
nationally recognized until 1966, when President Lyndon B. Johnson
issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers and
designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day; it became a
permanent national holiday in 1972, when President Richard Nixon
  signed it into law; and
WHEREAS, A father fulfills the multifaceted responsibilities
of his vital role in the family; devoted fathers not only take on
the responsibilities that come with the title of father, but also
take on the responsibilities of being a role model, protector,
provider, and best friend; he must both nurture and discipline his
children, while also serving as their teacher; above all, he
strives to instill in his children faith, enduring values, and a
sure sense of right and wrong; and
WHEREAS, Fathers teach their sons what it means to be a man
and their daughters how a man should respect a lady, and encourage
their children never to settle for less than their dreams; these
indispensable values help shape the lives of future generations,
and in this way the selfless acts of fathers last forever; and
WHEREAS, Being a father means accepting the duty of molding
and shaping the next generation, and on Father's Day, we honor those
who have stepped forward and taken up this challenging yet
rewarding responsibility; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
Legislature hereby commemorate Father's Day 2015 and honor the
caring men who have dedicated their lives to building strong
families and a bright future for those who follow in their
  footsteps.
