R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month and
  National Caregiver Month are being observed in November 2015; and
         WHEREAS, According to the Alzheimer's Association, more than
  five million Americans are afflicted with this progressive form of
  dementia, and over 15 million family members and friends serve as
  Alzheimer's or dementia caregivers; and
         WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease causes noticeably degraded
  cognition, and symptoms include memory loss, disorientation,
  decreased judgment, severe mood or personality changes, and loss of
  initiative; the disease typically strikes individuals who are 65
  years of age or older; approximately five percent of sufferers,
  however, have early-onset Alzheimer's, which can appear in people
  as young as 40 years old; and
         WHEREAS, There is no cure for this devastating illness; it is
  one of the leading causes of death for seniors in the United States;
  in Texas, Alzheimer's is responsible for more than 5,000 deaths per
  year, and the number of people affected is growing; and
         WHEREAS, Increased research is critical to stemming the tide
  of Alzheimer's disease, and awareness of the demands faced by those
  who care for Alzheimer's patients is key to our appreciation of
  their efforts; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize November 2015 as National Alzheimer's
  Disease Awareness Month and National Caregiver Month and encourage
  all Texans to learn more about Alzheimer's.
