R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month and |
|
National Caregiver Month are being observed in November 2015; and |
|
WHEREAS, According to the Alzheimer's Association, more than |
|
five million Americans are afflicted with this progressive form of |
|
dementia, and over 15 million family members and friends serve as |
|
Alzheimer's or dementia caregivers; and |
|
WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease causes noticeably degraded |
|
cognition, and symptoms include memory loss, disorientation, |
|
decreased judgment, severe mood or personality changes, and loss of |
|
initiative; the disease typically strikes individuals who are 65 |
|
years of age or older; approximately five percent of sufferers, |
|
however, have early-onset Alzheimer's, which can appear in people |
|
as young as 40 years old; and |
|
WHEREAS, There is no cure for this devastating illness; it is |
|
one of the leading causes of death for seniors in the United States; |
|
in Texas, Alzheimer's is responsible for more than 5,000 deaths per |
|
year, and the number of people affected is growing; and |
|
WHEREAS, Increased research is critical to stemming the tide |
|
of Alzheimer's disease, and awareness of the demands faced by those |
|
who care for Alzheimer's patients is key to our appreciation of |
|
their efforts; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize November 2015 as National Alzheimer's |
|
Disease Awareness Month and National Caregiver Month and encourage |
|
all Texans to learn more about Alzheimer's. |
