SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 127

WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the League of United Latin American Citizens Council 402 on the occasion of its Annual Scholarship Gala; and

WHEREAS, Council 402 was founded in 1964 and is known as the Education Council; since 2002, it has awarded more than $400,000 in scholarships to deserving, financially disadvantaged students through its nonprofit Houstonians Scholarship Fund; and

WHEREAS, This year's gala is being held in conjunction with National LULAC Week, which is being celebrated February 15 through 21, 2015, and marks the 86th anniversary of the organization; Houston Independent School District Trustee Juliet Stipeche is being recognized by Council 402 at the event for her exemplary work on behalf of Houston students; Herlinda Garcia, principal at J. P. Henderson Elementary School, is being named Educator of the Year, and the Houston Hispanic Forum is being named Education Organization of the Year; and

WHEREAS, The League of United Latin American Citizens has since its inception played a vital role in securing civil rights and educational opportunities for Hispanic Americans, and Council 402 has been instrumental in the success of these initiatives; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th Legislature, hereby commend the League of United Latin American Citizens Council 402 on its many contributions to the community and extend to its members best wishes for a successful Annual Scholarship Gala and National LULAC Week celebration; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the council as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
