SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 137

WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Emilio Nicolas Sr., who has been selected as the 2015 Texas Medal of Arts Honoree for multimedia; and

WHEREAS, The Texas Medal of Arts Awards are presented by the Texas Cultural Trust to honor Texas luminaries who have achieved success through their creative talents; the awards highlight the powerful role the arts play in children's education, the state's economy, and Texas culture; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Nicolas is a founding pioneer of Spanish-language television in the United States; he began his television career in 1955 in San Antonio, and he later became the general manager and part owner of the nation's first full-time Spanish-language television station; and

WHEREAS, He went on to create a nationwide network of stations that later became the present-day Hispanic broadcast network Univision; and

WHEREAS, Emilio Nicolas is also a highly respected community leader who dedicates his time to numerous organizations; he serves on the boards of The University of Texas Health Science Center and the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, and he has contributed greatly to the rich cultural heritage of our state; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th Legislature, hereby commend Emilio Nicolas Sr. on his outstanding achievements and his community leadership and congratulate him on being named the 2015 Texas Medal of Arts Honoree for multimedia; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
