SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 172
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Trinity United Methodist Church, which is celebrating
  its 150th anniversary on March 1, 2015; and
 
         WHEREAS, This historic church was founded on March 5, 1865, by
  Elias Dibble; it was built on the corner of Travis and Bell Streets,
  where it stood until a fire destroyed it in 1946; many notable
  institutions can trace their origins to the church, including Wiley
  College, Emancipation Park, and Texas Southern University; and
 
         WHEREAS, The church has stood proudly at its current location
  on Holman and Oak Streets since 1951; the building's iconic
  stained-glass windows depict religious history and serve as a
  beautiful monument to the civil rights movement; and
 
         WHEREAS, Under the wise stewardship of its former pastors,
  and with the outstanding leadership of its current pastor,
  Dr. Robert E. McGee, Trinity United Methodist Church has continued
  to grow and to play a vital role in the Houston community; and
 
         WHEREAS, The commemoration of its 150th anniversary is an
  opportunity to reflect on the church's rich history in the city
  and on the ministries it has established to the benefit of the
  community; now, therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
  Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to the members and clergy of
  Trinity United Methodist Church for a memorable 150th anniversary
  celebration; and, be it further
 
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  the church as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
