SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 318
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
welcome the delegation from the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of |
|
|
Commerce to the Capitol; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The community of La Porte was founded in 1892 and |
|
|
is the oldest incorporated town in eastern Harris County; it soon |
|
|
became one of the premier tourist destinations in the region, as |
|
|
the public waterfront space known as Sylvan Grove began offering |
|
|
such amenities as bathhouses, boating piers, cottage retreats, |
|
|
and a Victorian hotel with a dance pavilion; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Through the years, the city continued to grow and |
|
|
prosper and overcame a fire and two hurricanes to become stronger |
|
|
and more unified; World War II brought shipyards and |
|
|
manufacturing activity to the region, and later the arrival of |
|
|
the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the |
|
|
Bayport Channel to the area transformed the local economy and |
|
|
helped La Porte establish itself as an outstanding community for |
|
|
industry; the opening of the La Porte-Baytown tunnel in 1954 |
|
|
spurred further development; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Today, ocean-going ships make their way up the |
|
|
Houston Ship Channel, passing both a vibrant industrial sector |
|
|
and the famed San Jacinto Battleground and Monument, where the |
|
|
battle that won Texas' independence was fought; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The La Porte-Bayshore area offers award-winning |
|
|
schools, expansive parklands, and convenient access to the |
|
|
amenities of Houston and the Houston Ship Channel; it is truly |
|
|
fitting that this exemplary community receive recognition for |
|
|
the important role it has played in our state's success; now, |
|
|
therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|
|
Legislature, hereby commend the people of the La Porte-Bayshore |
|
|
community on their many contributions to our state's growth and |
|
|
prosperity and extend to the delegation from the La |
|
|
Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce best wishes for a productive |
|
|
visit to the Capitol; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
the chamber as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
