SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 344
         WHEREAS, Lucy Moreno of Houston concluded her tenure as
  president of the Saint Patrick Catholic Church Young at Heart
  senior group in 2014; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Moreno ably led the group during her three
  terms as president, and her work has been a blessing in the lives
  of many area senior citizens; and
         WHEREAS, A longtime, dedicated community activist,
  Mrs. Moreno began her work at the age of 14, when she joined the
  Junior League of United Latin American Citizens; she later became
  part of its parent organization, the League of United Latin
  American Citizens, and went on to run voter registration drives
  and to participate in the boycott of grapes in support of farm
  workers as a member of the Political Association of
  Spanish-Speaking Organizations; after the Mexican American
  Education Council was formed in 1970, she campaigned with that
  group for the establishment of bilingual programs and magnet
  schools in the Houston Independent School District as well as for
  the increased presence of Mexican American teachers and
  counselors; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Moreno has also devoted significant time and
  energy to organizations that benefit women and senior citizens;
  active in the League of Women Voters and the Young Women's
  Christian Association, she acted as a delegate at several national
  YWCA conferences; moreover, in 1971, she helped organize La
  Conferencia de Mujeres por la Raza, also known as the National
  Chicana Conference, and she has worked with Project FAROS,
 
  a program designed to raise awareness of the risks of cancer and
  offer bilingual access to health care services; and
         WHEREAS, In 2013, the Leonel Castillo Community Center in
  Houston recognized her outstanding civic engagement by naming a
  room in her honor; and
         WHEREAS, Through her myriad endeavors, Lucy Moreno has
  contributed to building a more inclusive, caring, and vibrant
  community, and her commitment to social justice has earned her
  the respect and admiration of all who are privileged to know her;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
  Legislature, hereby commend Lucy Moreno for her dedicated
  service to the Young at Heart senior group at Saint Patrick
  Catholic Church and extend to her sincere best wishes for
  continued success and happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
  prepared for Mrs. Moreno as an expression of high regard from the
  Texas Senate.
