SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 376
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Shirley Brooks Barton for 50 years of outstanding service
  as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; and
         WHEREAS, Shirley Barton was initiated into the Phi Chapter
  of Alpha Kappa Alpha as an undergraduate student at Wiley College
  in Marshall, Texas; and
         WHEREAS, After graduation, she began a career of service as
  a physical education teacher at Sims Elementary School in La
  Marque, and she joined the sorority's Beta Phi Omega Chapter in
  Galveston; and
         WHEREAS, She moved to Dallas in 1968 and embarked on a
  rewarding career with the Dallas Independent School District at
  R. L. Thornton Elementary School; she went on to become the first
  African American teacher at Adelle Turner Elementary School, and
  her work with students at Franklin D. Roosevelt High School
  inspired her to earn a master of education degree and begin
  serving as a counselor; and
         WHEREAS, After her move to Dallas, Mrs. Barton became an
  active member of the Alpha Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha,
  and over the years, she has served the chapter in numerous
  leadership positions; most importantly, she has upheld the
  sorority's mission of service to others through her work with
  innumerable young citizens; and
         WHEREAS, An exemplary lady, Shirley Barton is respected
  and admired by many, and she is indeed deserving of recognition
  as a Golden Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
  Legislature, hereby commend Shirley Brooks Barton on her 50 years
  of dedicated service to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
  Incorporated, and on her many achievements and extend to her best
  wishes for the future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
