  In Memory
  of
  Dane R. Balcon
         WHEREAS, United States Army Specialist Dane R. Balcon
  served his country with uncommon valor, and his family, friends,
  and fellow Americans suffered an immeasurable loss when he died
  during a mission in Iraq on September 5, 2007, at the age of 19; and
         WHEREAS, Born on April 27, 1988, at Luke Air Force Base in
  Arizona, Dane Balcon hailed from a family with a proud tradition
  of military service, with his father, mother, grandfather, and
  two great-grandfathers having answered their nation's call to
  duty in the armed forces; following his graduation from Sand
  Creek High School, he enlisted in the army in 2007 as a fire
  support specialist and received his training at Fort Sill,
  Oklahoma; and
         WHEREAS, Specialist Balcon's first assignment was to Fort
  Hood as a member of the 3rd Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st
  Cavalry Division; he was deployed to Iraq in July 2007 and
  courageously volunteered for a mission in the city of Balad on
  the day he lost his life; during his brief but distinguished
  career, he earned a number of commendations, including the Bronze
  Star, the Purple Heart, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Combat
  Action Badge, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraqi
  Campaign Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; and
         WHEREAS, This admired soldier left behind a devoted family
  that continues to cherish his life and legacy; as a lasting
  tribute to Specialist Balcon, a bill has been introduced to
  dedicate a bridge in his name along State Highway 151 in San
  Antonio, where his mother, Dr. Carla Sizer, and father, John
  Balcon, now reside; and
         WHEREAS, Although eight years have passed since Specialist
  Dane Balcon died in action, time will never diminish the
  sacrifice he made or the spirit of loyalty, bravery, and
  selflessness he demonstrated throughout his life, and his memory
  will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
  Legislature, hereby pay special tribute to the memory of Army
  Specialist Dane R. Balcon and extend heartfelt sympathy to his
  surviving family members and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
  this day, it do so in memory of Specialist Dane Balcon.
