SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 678
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize May of 2015 as Syringomyelia Awareness Month in Texas;
  and

         WHEREAS, Syringomyelia is a chronic disorder of the spinal
  cord that occurs when cerebrospinal fluid enters the interior of
  the spinal cord and forms a cavity known as a syrinx; and

         WHEREAS, Approximately 40,000 people in the United States
  have been diagnosed with Syringomyelia, and many endure chronic
  pain from the condition; some patients develop neuropathic pain
  syndromes that are difficult to treat; and

         WHEREAS, Although the precise cause of the disorder
  remains unknown, scientists at research facilities throughout
  the nation continue to study the mechanisms that lead to the
  formation of syrinxes; and

         WHEREAS, The American Syringomyelia and Chiari Alliance
  Project is a nonprofit organization that is leading the fight
  against Syringomyelia, and as more emphasis is placed on
  research, improved treatment techniques are expected to become
  available for those suffering from the debilitating condition;
  now, therefore, be it

         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
  Legislature, hereby commend all who are working to learn more
  about the causes of Syringomyelia and declare May of 2015 as
  Syringomyelia Awareness Month in Texas; and, be it further

         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
  honor of Syringomyelia Awareness Month.
